App Review - Camera Genius

Well unfortunately I think I have made the Battle for iPhography tool apps (apps that control your camera in some way e.g.. anti-shake or timer etc) in a previous post redundant because Here is the most recent winner. Our previous winner Darkroom premium is still a great app but I think that Camera Genius is now the current winner

Camera Genius by codegoo has a clean & simple interface & has a few features not seen in the other apps

Camera genius features

  1. A large tap anywhere button
  2. Screen guides for rule of thirds etc or just to keep things straight
  3. Anti-Shake
  4. Self Timer shutter release in a selection of increments
  5. Sound activated shutter

We have awarded it a highly recommended as it really is one of the better iPhography tools but we will note next to each feature what we think could be changed, not to criticise a great app but because we love to add constructive criticism of how we feel it could be even better improved

1. Splash screen. Neat but it would be great if the app loaded quicker & this was unnecessary

2. The Anti-Shake Screen with visual feedback. It does a good job of steadying the shot but it would be great if you could adjust the sensitivity as I find it a little bit slow. This shot shows the Big button feature activated which allows most of the screen to be used as the shutter release

3. Clicking the left arrow reveals all of the camera tools. I think it’s clear & well laid out but I think the icon should either be a spanner indicating tools or some cogs indicating settings

4. Guides. There is a few to choose from which is great but you cant quickly exit them you have to tap the guide setting several times to get back to the blank setting. A quick way to jump back to normal would be good

5. Timer to allow you to get in the picture. Tapping the numbers allows you to select the time interval before the shutter is released.

6. Sound activated shutter. I’m not sure of the technical workings but it seems to scan the room for ambient noise & activates the shutter when the sound spikes above this. example clapping or saying cheese

2 other features not shown is:

  1. When the app is saving a shot, a handy now saving icon appears in the top left hand corner so you don’t accidentally close the app before you save the shot
  2. A little counter appears in the top right to record how many shots you have taken in that session.

When is a bug a feature? When it tricks your friends into keeping shots. The arrow at the bottom right allows you to revue your iPhographs but its has a bug that makes them appear skinny. On the bonus side, how often have you taken a pic of someone & they have said “give me a look” & the inevitable “oh I look fat, please delete that”. No more arguing with friends to keep your pics

As you see above, even though I would love to see a few tweaks, iPhography.com is more than happy to award it a highly recommended & even better I have placed it in my dock as my preferred tool. You may still want to keep you standard camera app handy if you need to capture something fast.
