iPhography Tip

Here’s the tip:
Want nice Black and whites? Then shoot in colour. That way when you convert to black and white you can later selectively adjust each of the colours and not just brightness contrast etc. eg. A yellow line on a train platform may be tonally similar (the same level of greyness) as the concrete but in colour we remember yellow as being brighter so when converting to black and white, you can make the yellow stand out more with adjustment

Here’s the bad news:
We are unable to find any iPhography Apps that have separate adjustments for each colour when converting to black & white like in Photoshop. The closest we have found is Effects Lab which has an RGB Greyscale conversion tool which although gives more control than some, is still limited (& although an ok App, I’m not keen on the user interfac

So a note to App makers. If your app can do this, please go to our contact page and let us know about it. Otherwise…..

Here’s what we’d like to see:
The App we use most for creating Black & whites here at iPhography HQ & by our friends is Tilt shift Generator. Although this app was made for the opposite reason (to saturate colours) We have found the User Interface (UI) to be the simplest and friendliest way to quickly give your pictures some punch and selective focus

So what we would love to see is either an extension to this app or a separate app that would allow you to adjust brightness & contrast for all main colours present into greyscale, such as cyan, blue, green, magenta, yellow etc etc not just RGB Until then, if you haven’t thought of it before, try Tilt Shift Generator to give your black and whites some oomp

Oh and one more thing:
Although you cant make adjustments, you can have various combinations in Hipstamatic that produce some nice results. But because you cant load an image already taken from your camera roll, it’s a bit hit and miss. Eg. your kid does something cute (see image below) but you have the wrong lens / film combinations, then too bad its gone. I find myself using the normal built in Camera App for anything moving and histamatic for still life that I have time to adjust settings. Or you can memorize all of the lens / film combinations for different situations and hope you can start up the app quick enough.
