Grain, Grain Go away…….

Don’t come again another day!

Recently we had to tinker with our iPhones to get them working after we experienced the ‘why 10k?’ bug (here & here). We deleted the library on our iPhones & a few other files etc. We are not sure if the problem has been fixed by the recent update or if what we did fixed it, so we can’t confirm.

But the worst part is that when we reloaded our library we have noticed that Apple is now using a different compression method after the update that results in HORRIBLE dithered pixelted grain!

Previously The library images were basically just smaller versions, not degraded versions. Now I’m not sure why Apple has done this, maybe to make the memory not look so small. but the pictures look horrible & not only that but in the past I could get away with uploading old images from the iPhones library to social networking sites (But we recommend only using your camera roll for better quality). Now they’re also useless to edit with apps as the grain is far too enhanced.

Samples. We have blown the images to their fullest on the iPhone then captured a screen shot

Ironically the grain is worst on images taken with the iPhone & later backed up to your library. So that’s right, your iPhone photos look shit on your iPhone????

Excuse the language but seriously they do look shit!

What we would like to ask from Apple is this.

  1. Not everyone fills their iPhones with music & movies. I like to use my iPhone to take & share iPhographs. Please allow us to select the size of the images we wish to back up to our iPhones. give us a selectable option like small, medium, large & full size
  2. Add a warning when selecting any of those settings that says eg. “this will use approximately 1.7gb of your iPhones storage” & of course it would adjust depending on the size of the images. Or it will offer a warning that “your iPhone/iPod does not have enough space at that size selection”.
  3. let us select quality of compression eg. low, medium, high & maximum

If you were to do this Apple, not only could we share better quality versions online to things like facebook & flickr but also iPhographers could use all of the wonderful Apps that have been developed for the iPhone.

Here is the other good reason Apple. We will have more of an incentive to buy bigger capacity iPhones as they come out.

As it stands Apple, we only have a brief window of time to edit iPhographs with the iPhones Apps before our next back up with iTunes/iPhoto. After that the quality is too poor to be of use for anything other than “hey amy, this is what my boyfriend looks like but he’s much more attractive without all the grain”

PS To the Tumblr Team, I love being able to upload pictures inline now with your new feature without having to upload to my server first. Good Work!
