App Review - TiltShiftGen 1.0

TiltShift Generator by Takayuki Fukatsu replicates the effect of the tilt shift lenses.
The Real “Tilt-shift” lens actually encompasses two different types of movements: rotation of the lens plane relative to the image plane, called tilt, and movement of the lens parallel to the image plane, called shift. Tilt is used to control the orientation of the plane of focus (PoF), and hence the part of an image that appears sharp; it makes use of the Scheimpflug principle. Shift is used to change the line of sight while avoiding the convergence of parallel lines, as when photographing tall buildings.
But mostly people know Tilt Shift for it’s ability to make things look like miniatures. If you take a shot high & from an angle, boost the saturation (to make it look like everything is made from plastic or painted) & selectively focus on a small area you will come up with a very realistic looking miniature effect.
Now to the App….

This is the first screen & you can select an image from your library (YAY! a feature missing from Takayuki’s other app Toycamera) or you can use the camera to capture your iPhograph

Next (it was hard to capture this with the screen shot as the guide only appears when you tap the screen) you can select a parallel area to stay in focus & the outside of that gets blurred or the same but with a round spot. The slider controls the transition from clear to blurred in the “sweet spot”

This section is almost worth the price alone. The saturation, brightness & contrast sliders do a fantastic job & don’t turn the image into a mess of jagged pixels like other apps. We can’t stress how simple & well functioning these are. If you extended the blur areas to their extremities & turn it down, you could almost just use these to tweak all your iPhographs

Vignetting once again is also well handled with smooth gradations & is adjustable with the slider

This is the save screen where you can add it to your library or export it
So yet again the finished sample shots (Below) were just taken around the house & in rather poor lighting but as you can see the effect is still quite awesome. Now picture it with nature scenes or looking down on a city on a nice day or in the evening with all the lights & you will soon find a whole stack of things to use this app on

Below is some added textures from PhotoFinish to give you some potential ideas

Normally we sum up an app review with what needs to be fixed, but we haven’t experienced any bugs or crashes & it does exactly what it should & some more. The user interface is also very simple & intuitive. If we were to suggest some ideas, we would ask for a square format or crop & maybe to remove the blur completely if we wish to just use the great colour & vignetting features
This app comes with the highest of recommendations from iPhography.com. Easily the best Faux Tilt-Shift effect available to iPhographers & an essential part of every iPhographer’s kit. You won’t regret the purchase
