600 & counting!
Welcome to our 600th Tumblr follower as well as the thousands of people that visit iPhography.com. It’s fantastic to see the iPhography movement growing so fast.
A bit about our history…
When we first started to dream up the idea of an iPhone Photography Movement in July of last year, we went looking for a suitable name. When discussing ideas we wanted something that not only described what it was but could also describe the people who are a part of the movement & the equipment & techniques they were using
Although iPhography.com would rank higher in search engines if we included iPhone Photography in the title, we decided to avoided the temptation as:
- It’s an Apple trademark & could limit our use of it if we were to release products, books or magazines & needed to get permission each time from Apple
- We didn’t want to be fixated just on the iPhone as we realised that the experience of taking photographs on the iPhone was such a fun & unique opportunity, it would probably in the future be rolled out to iPods & other Apples products just like the iSight in the Mac & Macbooks
We were obviously attracted to the iSomething type name as it has associations with Apple, it’s iPhone & iLife products & eventually we guessed the iPods would join as well. A great example of a photography movements name was Lomography. Lomography describes the movement as well as the equipment & a shortened version such as Lomo could be applied to the resultant images or Lomographer for people who were part of that movement.
What made Apples products such a unique experience was that you could not only capture images but you could also share them via the Internet. The ‘internet’ was the defining thing about the iPhone combined with the fact that you always have it with you. This is something that lomographs, Polaroids, SLR’s, Click & shoot cameras & almost all other photographic mediums were lacking. Later when the App store opened & downloading Apps from the internet became just as important, we realised ’i’ for Internet was starting to seem appropriate, so iSomething it was
The next thing we realised was that there wasn’t a chance in hell that Apple with it’s background in Final Cut Pro, iMovie etc etc was not going to add video, especially seeing as this was already a feature of iSight in the Mac. So just limiting it to ‘iPhone Photo’s’ would be a dumb thing to do. With Apple being kings of simplicity we decided to go for simple & short. Thus iPhone Photography - iPhonePhotography - iPhonetography - iPhoneography - iPhotography & finally….. iPhography
For those of you that are new, in the About / Introduction on iPhography.com you can find a simple description of iPhography terminolgy
You might also notice that iPhograph.com, iPhographer.com & iPhographic.com all point to this site
After finishing our research, experimenting & getting up to speed with the iPhone, we set about designing this site. Once again being fans of simplicity, Tumblr was our first choice. Our designer (& editor & ermm creator, well let’s face it… me) Funky Love Bunny had been successfully using it for a while & it provided the perfect medium. Speed, simplicity, customisabilty & for people to be able to easily & socially interact with the site, just like all good movements should. PLUS it had it’s own iPhone App!
When we commenced the site we were not the very first, but in our efforts to unite the movement we had offered to buy some of the other sites & integrate them into iPhography.com. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful & now most of the early blogs have since disappeared
Our ultimate ambition is to become an almost invisible framework in which the movement can grow, share & showcase the best in iPhography. We will continue to refine & enhance iPhography.com until the movement begins to take upon a life of it’s own.
It’s been a fun & interesting journey. We are now onto our second iPhones (3GS) & looking forward to seeing more iPhographic kit in the future. Thank you for being a part of iPhography, thank you for your feedback & we look forward to the future of the iPhography movement with you
Remember if you follow us on Tumblr or by RSS etc. Don’t forget to drop by from time to time to comment & share your experiences with everyone & just to say hi. Also you can submit your best iPhograph each day & the best get featured in the blog
